I Can. I Just Need Help.

Ever heard a child say ‘I can’t’?

I remember the day my son went from a toddler that demanded ‘I do’ to one day announcing ‘I can’t’ as he struggled to open a jar of jam. I heard him say it again when he was frustrated as he tried to zip up his coat.

My husband and I looked at each other and quickly reminded Kai, ‘Yes, you can! You just need help!’

Ever caught yourself saying, ‘I can’t do that’?

If we heard a young person saying ‘I can’t’ we would be wondering why they were using words that are self defeating and that close the door to growth and possibility. We would remind and encourage them to:

  • Dream Big
  • Shoot for the Stars
  • Believe Everything is Possible

As we gain independence, knowledge and sometimes a big ego, we start to think ‘I can handle this’ and if we can’t handle it – often we don’t want to admit it. Maybe because we fear looking weak or needy or maybe we truly think we can do it all!

What if you could achieve whatever it is you really wanted but you just needed the courage to ask for help?

My son really wanted the jam but couldn’t open it by himself. However, by passing the jar to me to open, it allowed him to see that in life we all need help from time to time.

I believe we are on this planet to support and help one another. When we choose to be brave and reach out for the help we deserve – we teach our children and the people around us to do the same.

The next time you hear yourself or someone else say ‘I can’t’ gently remind them and yourself to replace those words with…
‘I can. I just need help.’
